La radioactivité est un phénomène naturel et omniprésent, mais l’activité humaine l’a transformé en une menace invisible et inquiétante : catastrophes nucléaires, déchets radioactifs ou bombes atomiques. Dans la lignée des projets Earthquake Lamp, Political Lamp ou MoonPhase Lamp, l’œuvre Instability of Nature cache sa véritable nature derrière un bel objet, et modifie immédiatement le regard de l’observateur dès lors que son propos est révélé, en provoquant angoisse et fascination.
Cachant un compteur Geiger-Müller, la création Instability of Nature est capable de détecter les rayonnements ionisants beta et gamma dégagés par les atomes radioactifs. Chaque particule détectée provoque une onde lumineuse se propageant à la surface de l’œuvre, accompagnée par le clic caractéristique d’un compteur Geiger. Un dispositif lumineux qui permet de visualiser la radioactivité ambiante qui nous entoure.
Instability of Nature est une réflexion sur la détérioration, au travers du prisme de la désintégration des noyaux atomiques. Une exploration des similitudes entre le monde minéral et le monde organique. Un questionnement sur les relations entre le délabrement de la matière et la dégénérescence de l’esprit et des sociétés humaines.

Instability of Nature
Transforming radioactivity into a work of art. A luminous creation reacting in real time to the ambient radioactivity. A hypnotizing ripple disturbed by waves of light. A visualization of the particles captured by a Geiger-Müller counter.
Radioactivity is a natural and ubiquitous phenomenon, but human activity has turned it into an invisible and frightening threat: nuclear disasters, radioactive waste or atomic bombs. In line with the Earthquake Lamp, Political Lamp or MoonPhase Lamp projects, the work Instability of Nature hides its true nature behind a beautiful object, and immediately modifies the observer’s behavior when its purpose is revealed, causing anxiety and fascination.
Hiding a Geiger-Müller counter, the creation Instability of Nature is able to detect beta and gamma ionizing radiations released by radioactive atoms. Each particle detected causes a light wave propagating on the surface of the artwork, accompanied by the characteristic click of a Geiger counter. A luminous device which makes it possible to visualize the ambient radioactivity which surrounds us.
Instability of Nature is a reflection on decay, through the prism of the disintegration of atomic nuclei. An exploration of the similarities between the mineral world and the organic world. A questioning about the relationship between the deterioration of matter and the degeneration of the mind and human societies.
